Umbro U16 Division 2 Passage 0 College Corinthians 2. Passage under sixteens resumed their league season on Sunday morning in Rockenham Park. The inclement weather the previous week caused their game versus Corinthians to be postponed. The game was refixed for this week so Cointhians were the opponents on what was a wet, dreary dark morning. The game kicked off at ten thirty and straight away Passage got into their rhythm passing the ball accurately and pushing the visitors back. Corinthians had an early chance when after ten minutes one of their forwards broke free into the Passage area. As he bore down on goal Dylan Murphy charged off his line narrowing the angle and spreading himself perfectly allowing him to pull off an impressive save. This was the only significant goal scoring opportunity Corinthians had in the whole of the first half. Passage on the other hand were a constant threat and played much the better football. The midfield triumvirate of Mark Hanlon, Michael Fenton and Sam Mealy combined excellently and moved the ball seamlessly upfield launching numerous attacks. Opportunities fell to Michael Fenton, Craig Crowley, Joe Binto and Sam Mealy. Unfortunately they were unable to convert any of these chances and their impressive play went unrewarded with the score at nil nil when the half time whistle sounded. The second period started where the first left off with Passage attacking the visitors goal and creating a number of goalscoring opportunities which they failed to finish. Passage’s inability to put Corinthians to the sword was punished early in the second half. A Corinthians corner was cleared by the Passage defence but the ball fell to a Corinthians attacker. The attacker curled a delightful ball from the edge of the box into the opposite corner of the goal. This goal which came against the run of play infused life into Corinthians and they became a lot more prominent in the game. Passage continued their good play and moved the ball confidently from defence to attack continually. The opportunities kept on presenting themselves but on the day Passage were just unable to apply the finishing touches. Dylan Murphy in the Passage goal was idle for long periods of the game but as the second half wore on he was called into action and on two occasions he pulled off two superb saves. With twenty minutes remaining Corinthians sealed the game with an opportunistic goal. A speculative shot from outside the box was blocked but one of the Corinthians attackers reacted quickest and toe poked the ball over the line. Passage did not relent in their pursuit of goals and a Sam Mealy freekick from the Passage left brought off a top class save from the Corinthians net minder. The game finished with Corinthians winning by a two goal margin. This was a disappointing result given such an impressive footballing and wholehearted performance by the Passage lads. The difference between the teams was the clinical finishing of the visitors. Had Passage been as ruthless in front of goal as Corinthians this game could well have been over at halftime. There were a lot of positives to be taken from this game. Jason Carroll gave an assured display at fullback which belied the fact that it was his first full game in this position. Kevin Byrne gave a strong and commanding display in the centre of defence with Joe Binto playing well on the left hand side of midfield. The hard hours of training and practice are beginning to show and were very evident in todays display. It is by sticking with these beliefs and aspirations that the results will eventually match the displays.
