Uncluttering your home in 2015 It was a moment of intense - TopicsExpress

Uncluttering your home in 2015 It was a moment of intense laughter during a chitchat with my sister when she jokingly said that I should try and delete some stuffs in my brain to allow for proper ventilation. Later on, I sat down and thought about it that there was wisdom in what seemed like a joke. Just like my sister insinuated that a cluttered brain may not allow free flow of ideas and inspirations, so also, a cluttered home or office may not allow free flow of joy and peace. A cluttered atmosphere is actually a brain and energy drainer. It feels good to look around your house and see everything in order, and it feels better when we know where to find what we are looking for. There are some people that have confessed that when they sleep on a bed that is piled with so many books, newspapers and other junks, they automatically have horrible dreams. This proves true of the saying that cleanliness is next to godliness. The good news for everyone dealing with clutter (either of the mind or home) is that you can conquer it no matter how terrible they look, and you will feel better when you are more orderly and more organised. The stress in your face and body will ease off and your confidence will return when you unclutter your environment. Imagine what your home or life will look like when you are enjoying a peaceful night rest in your serene bedroom, or may be when you welcome friends and families for visits and they compliment your modish home. Imagine the peace that will fill your heart when you get ready in the morning and you are not searching through the kitchen racks, dining table, or beneath the sofa for your shoes, jewellery or car keys. I hear people complain all the time that their homes are cluttered and they don’t know where to start. Getting organised requires commitment to do things differently, just like commitment to quit drinking or lose weight. Dealing with long term clutter requires a commitment of both time and energy. A more effective way to reduce clutter is to develop habits that prevent further mess from accumulating. We must realise that if things are continuously added to the home, eventually there will be no more room. It’s a fact. We don’t need to collect all those souvenirs at parties and events if we don’t need them. All those bowls from parties sometimes add to the clutter in the home. Clutter can also be those things we no longer use, or things that we feel that someday we may need. They could also be those things that we cherished some 10 years ago but our tastes have changed. They could be those white shoes that we wore just once as a chief bridesmaid but cannot part with them because they cost N35,000. They could be all those lipsticks and other make ups that have lasted at least four years in our cosmetic purse. They could be a pile of old newspapers with the hope that we would refer to them one day. They could be dozens of ice-cream bowls that we think will be useful someday. They could be buckets of paint that was remaining the last time we painted our house. (I am sure those paints must have dried up). They could be wall clocks that stopped working years ago, but with the hope that one day, they would be fixed. They could also be the notebooks that our undergraduate children used in primary school. They could even be those ‘size 10’ clothes in our wardrobe with the hope that someday, we would shrink from our present ‘size 20’ back into them. It is time to let go. It is time to let go of all those pots without lids, all those plastic lids without bowls, all those bathroom slippers without pair, all those faulty phone chargers and adaptors, all those socks without pair, etc. The major key to living in an organised home is to let go of old stuffs. Give yourself a deadline for broken items to be fixed, if not, discard them. We must also determine how long we want to keep newspapers. Unwanted and unused items (that are in good condition) can be given to charity, friends, family, or even recycled. Many people feel it’s bad to discard a photo even if it is blurred or brings back unhappy memories. At this point, the whole family can be involved in the process of sorting out their own stuffs, because one man’s clutter could be another man’s treasure. To let go of old and unused items will truly make the house spacious, but that is not the key to living an organised life. If we want to be organised, every item must have a home. Having a home for an item means that there is only one logical place to look for it. For example, there should be only one place that we keep remote controls, phone chargers, car keys, receipts, children’s books, etc. As we commence another year, a commitment to an organised life could help us to have clarity of mind and focus which could help us to pursue and achieve our goals for the New Year. The Lord has given to every human being the same amount of time, that is 24 hours a day, seven days every week, but interestingly, we do not achieve the same results even when we are faced with the same tasks. A cluttered mind contributes to poor performance and low productivity. I’m sure we have heard or seen some people who seem to do very little, their office desk is always clear of stuffs and yet, they receive all the encomiums. There are also others who are very hardworking and energetic, their office desk is always piled with documents and papers, yet they receive all the criticisms. Having clutter in the home, office and even in the mind is a sure way to slow down productivity and achievement because there cannot be a clear focus in the face of a clutter. A well organised life and home is what we all need to make this season enjoyable for us and our families, and we will have a clear focus of what we want to achieve in this new year. I wish you all a clutter free and a fruitful 2015. God bless. Copyright PUNCH.All rights reserved.
