Unfortunately, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has made winning virtually impossible. McConnell has consistently worked to sabotage the effort to defund Obamacare. He pressured senators to withdraw their support, he falsely accused conservatives of wanting a government shutdown, and he voted to give the Democrats the power to fund Obamacare. Now Mitch McConnell is working with the Democrats on a plan to fund Obamacare AND raise the debt limit. Not only will his plan force Americans to pay for a law they oppose, it will force them to borrow more money to do it. Conservatives tried to convince Mitch McConnell to join the fight, but he refused. Thousands of people in Kentucky asked him to use his leadership position to protect them from Obamacare, but he didn’t listen. Now Mitch McConnell is negotiating the Republican surrender and he has no leverage because he signaled early on that he would do anything to avoid a shutdown. He gave Harry Reid (D-NV) a blank check and now the Democrats can demand whatever they want. Mitch McConnell has left his party powerless. He gave up the fight on Obamacare and forced many of his Republican colleagues to adopt the untenable position that all government programs must be funded if they are part of current law. He’s taken away his partys constitutional right to protect Americans from having to pay for bad programs. Republicans no longer have a say because Mitch McConnell won’t let them take a stand. Hes made them Republicans in name only. There’s still a chance that McConnell will realize his mistake and insist that Obamacare be defunded, but its not likely. He would rather concede to the Democrats than fight them. He would rather fund Obamacare than admit conservatives were right. Thankfully, there are a few leaders in the Senate who stand on principle when it matters. Now we need to elect more of them.
