Update: Shanghai stampede claims 36 lives, injures 47 36 people have lost their lives and another 47 have been injured so far in a disastrous #stampede that occurred amid a #NewYear celebration in #Shanghai, the city’s municipal government confirmed on Thursday. Seven people who suffered minor #injuries had left hospital by 11:00 a.m. Thursday. There are 12 males and 28 females among the other 40 who remain in hospital. Severe injuries still keep 13 of them in life-threatening danger. Among the casualties, 33 people’s identities have been made clear, including one person from Taiwan killed and two Taiwan natives along with one Malaysian injured, according to local authorities. The identification work is still ongoing. Doctors in charge of the rescue work told a CCTV reporter that most of the injured suffered suffocation and visceral organ damage after being trampled, which led to surging pressure on their chests and abdomens. On Thursday morning, local residents voluntarily presented flowers for the dead and injured in Chen Yi Square on the Bund, a popular waterfront area in the city, where the stampede broke out at about 11:35pm on Wednesday. It remains unclear what caused the deadly incident, which marks one of the biggest tragedies in a major Chinese city in recent years. Rumors have been rife on the internet that the incident was triggered by fake money thrown from a building that night. A police investigation into the case is still underway.
