Update from US National Weather Service Lake Charles 08/14/13 3 pm: The National Weather Service in Lake Charles is still expecting a cold front to move south across the region through tonight into early Thursday morning. This will result in scattered showers and thunderstorms during that time. Some of these storms have the potential to produce numerous lightning strikes and gusty winds of 40-50 mph, strong enough to cause minor wind damage. In the tropics, the system in the western Caribbean Sea is still weak and will be over the Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday before emerging over the southern Gulf of Mexico or Bay of Campeche on Friday. At the same time, the cold front that moves south of us will interact with this system and create an axis of moisture from the Yucatan to the eastern Gulf of Mexico this weekend. What it all means is a big rain event for people in southeast Louisiana to the Florida panhandle. There is a small chance that a weak low pressure area could develop along this axis of moisture, but it will be weak at best and will remain east of our region this weekend.
