VA struggles with painkiller addiction Veterans are experiencing growing rates of drug addiction, in large part because the Department of Veterans Affairs continues to prescribe large volumes of opioid painkillers for chronic pain, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting. Although the VA has alternative treatment options, including transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and acupuncture, they are rarely offered.
