VILLAGERS PROTEST AGAINST THE ARREST OF A REFORMED POACHER Irate members of Litein Village of Barwesa division in Baringo North Yesterday protested against the arrest of their member who was suspected to have killed an elephant at Lake Kamnarok Game Reserve last week. The protestors who travelled all the way from Litein to the county headquarters at Kabarnet town which is about 100 kilometers away are demanding for justice for their colleague whom they claim was arrested innocently. The protesting team who comprised of family members and neighbors of the suspected poacher brought their grievances to the Baringo County Information Office after they failed to get audience with the Police, Kabarnet law Court and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) offices. They wanted to have their colleague released since they claimed that KWS personnel falsely accused that he was found with elephant tasks estimated to be valued at shillings 500 thousand. This news that the suspect was arrested while in possession of elephant tasks shocked the entire Litein villagers as they claimed that the man had no elephant tasks during the last Friday 2:00am arrest. They residents said that they have lost faith with the KWS officials in Baringo because they falsely accused the husband of two wives to be in illegal possession of elephant tasks. Rogers Kipruto who is a neighbor to the accused said that it was bitter for their colleague to be arrested for a crime he never committed. The angry Kipruto lamented on the inhuman treatment accorded to the suspect by KWS officials saying it was like digging a grave for him. The wife of the suspect Emily Sumukwo who cried for justice wants police to release her husband so that they carry on with their preparations now that she is about to deliver. She said that she was much stressed by the arrest as the whole matter is disturbing her a lot and she wonders who will assist her when she goes for maternity while her husband is jailed innocently. The suspect who is currently on police custody at Kabarnet police station waiting for investigation before being charged in Court In a Court of Law. They residents accused KWS rangers to be behind the killing of elephants and other wild animals and they want the National Police Intelligence Service to investigate the claims to protect them from wrongful accuse by the malicious officers. As the case is expected to be heard at Kabarnet Law Court soon , the big dilemma is that who is right between the security officers and the protestors claiming the innocence of their person while the police say that the suspect was napped while possessing the elephant tusks. This big contradiction is waiting to be solved soon the case is brought to court. Meanwhile the Magistrate Law Courts sitting at Iten town in Elgeiyo Marakwet County is tomorrow expected to handle a case in which two suspected poachers linked with killing of an elephant at Rimoi Game Reserve are accusing KWS for assaulting them. The KWS rangers are accused to have tied the suspects with a rope on their patrol land cruiser car and dragged them for several meters on a rough road. THINK ABOUT THIS Ends/VIPASHO
