Valiente win Spanish Bronze Cup; Jornayvaz MVP By Alex Webbe Valiente (Bob Jornayvaz, Santiago Laborde, Adolfo Cambiaso and Santiago Torres) won the first high goal tournament of the season at Sotogrande’s Santa Maria Polo Club in Spain Friday afternoon. By a score of 11-7, Valiente downed Ayala (Iñigo Zobel, Diego Cavanagh, Pelon Stirling and Santiago Stirling) in the final of the first 22-goal tournament of the Spanish polo season. What was initially framed as a faceoff between 10-goalers Adolfo Cambiaso of Valiente and Ayala’s Pelon Stirling turned into a Valiente-dominated contest that displayed well-coordinated teamwork between the Valiente players and superior horsepower. Diego Cavanagh scored the first goal of the game to give Ayala the early 1-0 advantage, but Valiente came right back. Goals from Santiago Laborde and Adolfo Cambiaso gave Valiente a 2-1 lead. Santiago Stirling scored the final goal of the chukker for a 2-2 tie. Valiente took control of the game in the second and third chukkers, outscoring Ayala 4-1. Cambiaso added a flourish to the Valiente performance by scooping up the ball and racing nearly the length of the field to score the final goal of the chukker for a 6-3 lead. The two teams traded goals in the fourth with Cambiaso scoring for Valiente and Pelon Stirling responding for Ayala. With two chukkers left in regulation play, Valiente maintained their three goal lead, 7-4. Cambiaso opened the fifth with a goal from the field, 8-4, and Santi Torres added two more as Valiente extended their lead to five goals, 10-5. Pelon Stirling converted a penalty shot for Ayala’s only goal of the chukker. Ayala scored twice in the final chukker, one of the goals coming on a well-executed shot from the field from Pelon Stirling that carried over 90-yards. Ayala picked up a second goal in the chukker, but they had fallen too far behind and lost the match to Valiente, 11-7. Bob Jornayvaz was named MVP amateur player and was awarded the President’s Cup before accepting the bronze Cup on behalf of the Valiente team. High-goal play will continue at the Santa Maria on Sunday, August 3rd with the start of the Silver Cup. King Power (Top Srivaddhannaprabha, Alejandro Muzzio, Marcos Di Paola and Martin Espain) and Dos Lunas Espiritu Santo (Luis Domecq, Pascual S. de Vicuña, Agustin Grossi and Martin Iturraspe) are scheduled to play at 5:30PM followed by two 7PM games featuring Las Monjitas (Camilo Bautista, Tomas F. Llorente, Eduardo Novillo Astrada and Alejandro Novillo Astrada) and Halcyon Gallery (Charlie Hanbury, Juan Chavanne, Guillermo Terrera and Max Routledge); and Valiente (Bob Jornayvaz, Santiago Laborde, Adolfo Cambiaso and Santiago Torres) taking on Murus Sanctus (Corinne Ricard, Lucas James, Jaime G. Huidobro and Malcom Borwick).
