Veterans for Peace Chapter 114 will open its 2014 speaker series at 6 p.m. today [Wednesday, Aug. 6] at the Rocca Room, Mead Public Library. The series is intended to inform the public on current issues and stimulate thought and discussion. The first speaker will be Mary Diamond, educator, army veteran, world traveller and human rights advocate. Her topic will be “The Influx of Latin American Children Refugees, Causes, Effects and Possible Solutions.” Future speakers in September and October will be the Rev. Joseph Ellwanger, author of “Strength for the Struggle,” who will discuss his years in Burmingham, Ala., and involvement in the civil rights movement. In October, Navy veteran Allyssa Holschbach will discuss her tour of duty in Afghanistan and the environmental effects created by our practice of disposing toxic waste in open burn pits.
