Via Idahoans for Non-Lethal Canine Encounter Training SUPPORT OUR PROPOSED LEGISLATION It is my dearest wish for Christmas, that we Idahoans, law enforcement, POST Council, city and county governments and citizens, can come together to give our hard working officers the tools and education to safely and in a non-lethal way deal with dog encounters where the situation permits. There are a few major take-aways from the Filer incident last February: - Aspiring officers do not currently receive any guidance in how to deal with dog encounters in a non-lethal way while going through the 10 week POST Academy training, and no such curriculum amendments are currently considered by POST (although there are several free online training options, many agencies do not utilize them until an incident is picked up by media) - There is no mandated canine encounter continuing education for officers - There is no standard, state-wide use for force-continuum policy that applies to animal encounters. Where there are no policies, no training and no requirements, accountability can often only be achieved through civil law suits, which a costly and taxing on everyone, the profession of law enforcement and the victims. No one really wins. Lets change that and give our Idaho officers a leg up on their next canine encounter.
