Via Robert Kelly-Schleyer, a retired Atlanta police detective who is deeply concerned about police brutality and an ally in the fight for racial equality: My first shift as a rookie cop, in the Atlanta jail, I was told by the Lieutenant to accompany two cops up to the 6th floor with a rowdy prisoner. They stopped the elevator between the floors and beat the prisoner. The prisoner had wiped fingerprint ink on Officer J.Bs shirt instead of the proffered paper towels. J.B. Began to hit him with his fists. I thought I was a tough guy...but I had no idea just how powerful a 40 year old man (I was 20) could be, how hard he could strike another man with his fists. The other cop joined in too. They stomped him. He was bleeding from his ears, his nose, his mouth, his face, his scalp. They started the elevator again and we moved on up to the 6th floor. The door opened. The Desk Man sneered, Hey, he fell, huh? J.B. laughed. Yeah, he said. This was my introduction to the police culture.
