Victoria Osteen … Is this Christianity? youtube/watch?v=00-6OyXVA0M Victoria Osteen is espousing one of the most subtle forms of idolatry in our culture. Scripture clearly tells us that we are to worship God because He is worthy to be worshiped. He created us for His own glory (Is. 43:7), and He has saved us for His sake (Is. 48:9-11). While He doesn’t need our worship, we need to worship Him because that’s why we were created. Idolaters worship their god because of what they think the idol can do for them. In our “Christian” culture, many people have reduced God to an idol. For “Christian” idolaters, God is no longer the sovereign, holy God who does as He pleases for His own glory and for His own sake. They don’t worship Him because He is God. They come to God because they expect God, their idol, to bless them. (Youre not doing it for God, really, youre doing it for yourself.) Does God want His people to have great joy? Of course! But we don’t worship God because of what He can do for us. We worship God because He is God. What happens if “Christian” idolaters don’t receive the desired blessing? Either they go through a crisis of faith when their idolatry is exposed and begin to turn to the one, true God (the “furnace of affliction” in Isaiah 48:9) or they abandon God and Christianity altogether. “Christian” idolatry is not just another denomination. It’s a dangerous, false religion. (The link is to the “Bill Cosby response” video. Not a bad response, actually, but I’m using it because it had the best sound quality I could find.)
