Video just posted by a parent! We have talked about the situation at Leesburg Elementary a few times, and this is honestly the best crossing I have seen, but there is a 5 foot sidewalk where these kids are staged between crossings, you can see some of this children have to stand in the street, and the only way to get across is to run as fast as they can (a big safety issue that crossing guards are supposed to be stopping, but cannot because there isnt enough time to cross). Actually, they are usually yelling at the children to MOVE IT and yelling, YOU ARE GOING TO RUN OUT OF TIME and scaring the hell out of the kids (they are young and are literally running for their lives). This is where and why a child is going to die. When a child does die, the three organizations that will be responsible is the school, who says its not their concern because the kids are off property and its the crossing guards responsibility. The Leesburg Police Department who says its the schools fault for releasing too many children at once, and the Public Works for not following the recommendations of the Lake Sumter MPO (lakesumtersafeschool/images/pdf/20130319124625Leesburg-ES-Oak-Park-MS-Safe-Access-Study--full-report-.pdf), And the Public Works that says their hands are tied and they cannot change the timing of the lights and it is up to the crossing guard to make sure the students cross safely and the schools for releasing too many children at once. And the most responsible? The state legislator who is continuously writing into the laws protections for the police, schools, and public works to protect them from lawsuits making it completely legal to tell our kids to go to hell, and then killing them! SOMEONE needs to take a little responsibility in our community, and considering the last year, it will need to be someone other than Lake County Schools, because that is not something they tend to be concerned about! All the changes in the release of students at this school has increased the dangers to students. There is increased car and pedestrian traffic and students who used to walk out of their school to get on a bus now have to cross the driveway and a parking lot. The basic rule in safety is to reduce, not increase traffic. We just wish the decision makers would start reading the actual information out there before making their decisions. You couldn’t make more wrong choices if that was your goal! youtu.be/jxoc6-morRM
