*** Vietnam volunteer work camp 19th June – 4th July 2013 *** SUNDAY AM- Vietnamese culture day: our hosts give us an interesting powerpoint presentation on the culture of the country and its people which is interesting. We learn many things such as the fact that they will smile even when feeling angry as they don’t like conflict and think Europeans are very direct (they seem to think that this aspect of our culture is a good thing). This is followed by a traditional Vietnamese lunch of spring rolls which are raw veg, noodles, pineapple, egg and corriander in rice paper which is then dipped in fish sauce with chillies and garlic. SUNDAY PM- We play scrabble which people enjoy. Kyle’s team’s victory is taken away from them when Michael admits that ‘ginsteams’ is not actually a real word. UK culture day: we give a short talk on Lancashire its people, geography etc then have a pub quiz role play. This is followed by Jamila’s talk on Islam and the Asian community – Haider, Fahad & Faheemah demonstrate how to pray – this seems to interest our hosts most of whom do not seem to have an obvious religious faith. We then do some hangman with out hosts through which we teach them about bonfire night as well as other UK traditions. We ended this session in true English style with tea and biscuits – we were even treated to some Scottish shortbread! The rain finally stops to enable us to play rounders which they have no equivalent of – everyone enjoys this and the local community is intrigued. SUNDAY EVENING – A night to remember as the village hall is packed out with the local community. Some very cute young girls do a dance and a man sings some traditional songs. Our contribution consists of Lewis with the aid of others acting out a typical day in the life of a British teenager. Nathan, Faheemah, Falon, Rhys, Michael and Beth, thanks to tuition from Sam, manage to pull off a traditional Scottish dance (‘The Gay Gordons’) and Haider then finished the night by singing Bollywood & Punjabi classics which goes down well. We are all invited on stage to dance and are joined by a particularly enthusiastic gentlemen pulling off some memorable moves – he ís the head òf the village though hís wife seems slightly unimpressed by hís public display! The local community then asked some questions about how we feel about their village, food etc.
