Volvo Cars president and chief executive Hakan Samuelsson has called on V8 Supercars to ditch V8 engines in favour of hybrid powertrains. While Volvos return to V8s has been hailed a success, Samuelsson conceded the category in its current shape wasnt the best fit for the car maker moving forward. Currently, Volvo produces a six-cylinder engine in three of its models but doesnt offer an eight-cylinder production car. But the company is in the process of phasing out that six-cylinder engine to be replaced with a new range of four-cylinder petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines. Long-term V8s are not really the cars we will be producing so thats on the negative list, but lets now continue the contract we have, Samuelsson told Drive.
