WELLNESS WEDNESDAY On Completion By Valary Mumbo I was reading a related story written by Alexandra Stoddard and in it was a quote by H.W.Longfellow that says, “Great is the art of beginning, but greater is the art of ending.” Many times, we start something but in the middle for one reason or another stall and at times never get back to it. This could be because of fear that it won’t turn out as well as we’d have liked it to, that others might not like it as much as we do or expect them to, or we meet an obstacle that we feel inadequate to overcome. However, we need to learn the art of finishing whatever we have started and finishing strong; which is just as important as having started the activity. This is the only way we will be able to benefit from whatever it is we undertake and also enable others to benefit from it. Imagine if your favourite author had, in the middle of your best book, decided that she couldn’t carry the plot through to the end, the world would be less one amazing story and she would be less an extra source of income. The same applies for any task or project one might undertake; be it learning a sport, getting a second degree, writing a poem or even starting a business. Whether we are doing an activity individually or as a team, it is important that we do it to the best of our ability and to the very end. It takes discipline, courage, perseverance and risking vulnerability to see something through, especially if you are to share it with other people, but in not completing it we deny ourselves and the world the good that could have been. When you come across an unforeseen bump on the road, it is okay to give yourself pep-talks, step back and re-strategize, think of a different and more effective way to accomplish your goal. Also, when you are at the verge of giving up, think of why you started the project in the first place, will this be achieved if whatever you are doing is left hanging? If the task is indeed large and tasking, divide it into smaller, more workable phases and take them on one at a time. I believe that if we set our mind to goal, we are bound to achieve it. That I have written this article to the end is a reason to be proud of myself today, I do hope you enjoyed reading it. Take on a task and see it through to proper completion. However, we need to remember to be adaptable to change even as we go about our projects. Have a successful day!
