WHAT CAN MAN DO TO ME? By Bob Ponchot Paul says in Hebrews 13:6, "So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper: I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?’ " Christians are being persecuted the world over, and we know it. In many countries your life will be taken if you profess Christianity. No longer can Christians assemble in public meeting places for fear of imprisonment or worse. Much of that persecution has invaded our shores in America. There is all out war by the ACLU and other atheistic groups who want to rid America of any semblance of Christ and what He stands for. The Anti-Christ people have long ago come out of the closet and publicly ridiculed our Lord and "the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints." Jude 3. This persecution against God’s people will not get better, but worse. They not only want Christmas and Easter removed, they will eventually come after your preacher and what your church stands for. When we take a strong stand against sin, we invade their holy ground. Sin to them, is a misnomer. It is inappropriate, to them, for Christians to label their behavior as sin. Because this is happening now, and will increase, we will need a big dose of Hebrews 13:6. First of all, the Lord is our helper. We are not alone. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were not alone in the fiery furnace. Daniel was not alone in the lion’s den, and David was not alone when he went before Goliath. The Lord was their helper and He will be there for us. Knowing this ought to give us confidence. Paul also says in Hebrews 13:5, "Because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’" This verse is a quote from Deuteronomy 31:6 when Moses said, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." Can we find this kind of faith today? I believe God wants us to have this kind of faith. Faith that moves mountains. Faith that will say the right things instead of the popular things. Faith that says "no" when the world says "yes". And above all else, faith to unashamedly declare our faith in God and His Son and the Bible as the Word of God. We need faith to defeat our fears. Our text says, "I will not be afraid." 2 Timothy 1:7 says "For God did not give us a spirit of fear (timidity), but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline." Our God is great, powerful, loving, and concerned about us. "What can man do to me?" If things get bad from time to time, and they will; remember the words of Jesus: "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell." Matthew 10:28.
