WHAT HAPPENED ON THIS DAY! August 2, 1932: Peter Seamus Lorcan OToole, star of stage and screen, was born in Connemara, County Galway, Ireland, on this date. Dylan referenced OToole in one composition, and was inspired to write another song in which the actor appeared. The lyrics of Clean Cut Kid include the name of Peter OToole. Dylan recorded a version of the song during the Infidels sessions, on April 14 and 15, 1983, and returned to it the following year at Delta Sound Studios in New York. This 1984 version, with overdubs in 1985, was eventually released on the 1985 Dylan album, Empire Burlesque. In September, 1984, Dylan, Ron Wood, and Benmont Tench joined Lone Justice at the Power Station in New York to record Clean Cut Kid and another Dylan composition, Go Away Little Boy. Only the later was released as a Lone Justice 12 B-side, and was eventually released on the compilation, The World Is Not My Home. The Textones released a version of Clean Cut Kid on their 1984 debut album, Midnight Mission. Singer Carla Olson is said to have added the additional lyrics. The album also featured Don Henley, Ry Cooder, Phil Seymour, Barry Goldberg, and Gene Clark. Olson would go on to collaborate with ex-Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor. On the recent reissue of the album on Acadia Records, one of the bonus tracks was an alternate mix of Clean Cut Kid.
