WHEN WILL EXTRA-JUDICIAL KILLING BY THE POLICE STOP - Watching the Lagos CP yesterday on Channels TV, i felt like we are back in the stormy and brutal days of former IGP Sunday Adewusi, when it was boldly inscribled on the vechiles of our police "Kill and Go". As a tenager then, i used to be very scared whenever i see police vechile. I never ceased to wonder how a tiny group people are privileged to kill and away scot-free when the holy bible in the ten commandments very clearly and unequivocally says "Thou shall not kill". But then, inspite of this unqualified license to mille by our policemen, accidental discharges and extra-judicial killings were a rarity. A policeman killed an Okada rider in cold-blood and his boss the CP rather than show remorse had the presence of mind to tell us the law baning Okada from major highways. He did not even commiserate with the family of deceased. He did not tell us whether the trigger-happy policeman has arrested and being orderly roomed or being arraigned in court for murder. He sounded very much animalistic fit only for UI zological garden. Now the wife, children, siblings, family and friends are left to bury and mourn their beloved. Life is truly cheap here because in less than one week, it is going to be life as usual: the beat goes on. And the lunatic who tragically ended the life of the Okadaman, if care is not taken, will be allowed to roam the streets again. I fondly remember one of my professors who told us to do everything humanly possibile to avoid being killed accidentally because your assailant may be left off the hook eventually. May the Soul of the Okadaman never rest until he had pulled the CP and the policeman to the great beyond.
