WHO IS A LOZI?? Lozis are not a tribe, they are a nation, a clan. I read about them.......... This was reiterated, among many, by Hon. Burnside, MP for the then Broken Hill (now kabwe), in the 1963 parliament debate. This Honourable British white man was not far from the truth. Oh! Yes lozi is not a tribe but a Common lunguage of the peoples of Barotseland whose only grave mistake was to institute a democratic process of togertherness with Northern Rhodesians (zambians) who did not know what democracy was, but fell short of its understanding and implementation, as they tried to subjugate the nation of Barotseland under their illegal laws. However, an experiment to make Barotseland a province of zambia styled as western province, has failed. In this regard Barotseland has started the process of actualizing its statehood following the Barotse National Councils acceptance of march 27,2012 of zambias unilateral abrogation of Barotseland Agreement of 1964 in 1969,thereby Barotseland now lives by the true meaning of its creed. As an organic nation Barotseland has one common language and 38 enthnic tribes as follows: Mbowe,Mubia,Maseba,Mayeyi,Mayauma, malucazi,Maluunda,Mafwe, makwangwali, nyengo,Maikwamakoma,Makwandi,Maimilangu,Maliuwa,Makwangwa,Mambukushu,Mankoya, Mambunda, Makwamashi, Makwamwenyi, Mashasha, Masimaa, Mandundulu,Mambumi,Malukolwe,Makwengo,Mashanjo,Mananzwa,Makololo,Matoka-leya,Maluvale,Machokwe,mandebu,makwamulonga,Matotela,Mahumbe,Aluyi and Malushange. Thus there is no single tribe in Barotseland which is more lozi than the other. The only visible difference is their participation in social, cultural, political and religious welfare plus their inclination to the center. Likewise, there is no single tribe in Barotseland which is more Royal than the other. For example;the late litunga Sir Mwanawina lewanika had some Nkoya blood, whilst chief kandala of the mBunda tribe has some connection with king lewanika together with senior chief mwene chiegele who was born from a Royal princess. The question, who is a lozi is a decerption initiated by infamous first president of the failed unitary state of zambia,Mr.Kenneth Kaunda, and perpetuated by successive and oppressive zambian regimes. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORIGIN OF LOZI LANGUAGE Prior to the year 1830,the Aluyi were the master tribe of the country Barotseland. Their valley was called Uliyi and they spoke Siluyi tongue. By 1830,king Mulambwa, assumed to be the 10th litunga with the longest and famous reign died. He left a large number of descendants, therefore war broke out following succession disputes among his two sons namely Mubukwanu and Silumelume and one was eventualy killed. However at a critical moment, the Barotse were weakened and divided. The kingdom was invaded by tremendous warriors from the south, these were the makololo, mainly of Basutu stock. They reached Uluyi on their conquering journey from the south, they quickly subdued the Aluyi and their subject tribes, and became rullers of Barotse for 25 years. As well known it was usual for victories tribe to marry the women and adopt indigenous language, for Makololo had their own women with them. They no doubt married many of the women of the country, but as these were many tribes, speaking diverse language and dialects, sikololo was made the medium of intercourse between the the makolo masters and their slaves. After 25 years, the Aluyi and the subdued tribes rebelled and slaughtered their masters (makololo), and restored Barotseland nation. Sikololo (lozi) remained as a common language among the indigenous tribes of Barotseland. It is therefore right and true to say that there is no single tribe in Barotseland which is more lozi than the other!! With help from truely, Muyunda makala, Mundia Batuke, Mwangala waikiki Barotse citizens.
