WHO: More Than 4,200 Ebola Cases Now Confirmed. ABC World News (9/9, story 3, 0:25, Muir) reported that there has been “a surge in the number of” Ebola “infections. Now more than 4,200 in all in west Africa.” The Washington Post (9/9, Izadi) “To Your Health” blog reports that the outbreak’s death toll is now “at least 2,296 in West Africa, the World Health Organization announced” yesterday. Those “figures are current through Saturday and showed a staggering spike of nearly 200 new deaths recorded in one day, according to WHO data.” Altogether, “West Africa now has 4,293 total cases of confirmed, probable and suspected Ebola infections, according to the WHO.” The AP (9/9, Dilorenzo, Cheng) reports that the “surge in Ebola infections in Liberia is driving a spiraling outbreak in West Africa that is increasingly putting health workers at risk as they struggle to treat an overwhelming number of patients.” Reuters (9/9, Miles) also covers the story. Meanwhile, the Washington Post (9/10, Phillip) “To Your Health” blog reports that according to a new model released by Oxford University, “in addition to the seven countries” that have already reported Ebola outbreaks, 15 other countries are at risk by virtue of their geography, including Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Angola, and Tanzania, among others. Fourth Patient With Ebola Arrives In US. USA Today (9/9, Szabo, Weintraub) reports that “a fourth patient with Ebola...has arrived in the USA for treatment.” This individual “arrived at Emory University Hospital” yesterday “after being flown from West Africa in an air ambulance, according to hospital officials.” The individual “will be treated in the same isolation unit in which two patients were recently treated and discharged.” The Los Angeles Times (9/10, Muskal) reports that “Emory said the patient will be treated in the same isolation unit where” two other patients, Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, received treatment. Also covering the story are the NBC News (9/10, Fox) website, Politico (9/9, Kenen), Reuters (9/10, Jenkins), the AP (9/10, Brumback), and CNN (9/10). Washington Post Calls For End Of Global “Complacency” An editorial from the Washington Post (9/10) calls for an end to the global “complacency” in addressing the Ebola epidemic, and says the US military’s plan to construct a $22 million 25-bed field hospital is “meager in the face of need.” Plain Dealer Urges End To “Foot Dragging” In Ebola Response. The Cleveland Plain Dealer (9/9) editorializes, “President Barack Obama’s announcement that he will fight Ebola by ordering the U.S. military to deliver hospital equipment to West Africa and by asking Congress for $88 million more to fight the disease is just what West Africa, and the world needs.” The Plain Dealer adds, “More foot dragging, as the world has done, risks disaster, warn experts: ‘We’re at that phase where we’re seeing an escalation that’s certainly outstripping our current capabilities to deal with this,’ said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, on National Public Radio” earlier this week.
