WHOI physical oceanographer Bob Pickart and collaborators have returned to the Chukchi Sea to map the distribution of under-ice phytoplankton mega-blooms, a phenomenon they first found in 2011. It has long been thought that phytoplankton only bloom in the Arctic summer after the ice has melted and sunlight can shine in spurring photosynthesis. However climate warming may be triggering these under-ice megablooms due to a thinning and depleted ice cover. In order to investigate this, the science team aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy, has ventured into the heavy ice early this spring. They are among the first to conduct a broad survey of the Chukchi ice shelf from early spring to summer. Follow their six-week expedition.
