WHY IS SPIDER-MAN UPSIDE DOWN??? When I started drawing - TopicsExpress

WHY IS SPIDER-MAN UPSIDE DOWN??? When I started drawing Spider-Man for Marvel Comics years ago, the one thing I wanted to bring to the character visually was a couple of things. Among them you can see in the posted drawing below. The first, and most important thing, for me at least, was having a sense this character, Peter Parker, had spider powers. not that he just dressed up in a costume with webs on it, but that he really had taken over some of the personality of a spider. So as often as I could I would put him in positions and poses that would be impossible for any human being to get into. In this piece of art, i was trying to show that by having him hang upside down like we see spiders do in real life. He isnt Thor or The Incredible Hulk or Batman, so he should have the physical appearance of any of those characters. Nor should he have the body language of any of them either. My goal was to always make all the Superheroes I drew act differently from each other. Secondly, as part of that acting, Spider-Man needed to feel like he was having fun with his secret identity. I mean, if you had the powers of a spider and could make webs and crawl up buildings, and swing across the city, wouldnt you have a big ass smile on your face most of the time? So with those two aspects firmly in my head, I was asked to do this piece of artwork as a cover for one of Marvels marketing books. I thought that having him hanging upside down from a ton of his own webbing, while reading Comic Books would fit the bill. This is a photo of the original black and white pencil/ink work I did. Hope you enjoy. TODD
