WINTER STORM Information Major Storm Expected to Hit Area Beginning Wednesday Evening Sandbag and Sand Availability, Information and Contacts Listed Below The National Weather Service is predicting a major storm will hit Northern California beginning Wednesday evening, continuing into Friday. The storm is predicted to bring heavy rains, high winds and, in the high country and mountain passes, blizzard and whiteout conditions. High winds are expected to down trees, which will likely cause power outages. Localized flooding is also expected. The Weather Service his issued a high wind warning in effect from Dec. 10, at 9 p.m. until Dec. 11, at 2 p.m. A flood watch is also in effect from Dec. 10 at 10 p.m., until Dec. 12 at 10 p.m. IMPORTANT TELEPHONE NUMBERS AND ONLINE SITES Please remember, in emergencies call 9-1-1. • American Red Cross: Go online to redcrosscrc.org or call 916-993-7070. • California Department of Transportation (Caltrans): For road conditions on state highways, go online to dot.ca.govor call the Caltrans road information number: 1-800-427-7623. • Liberty Utilities (provides electricity to North Lake Tahoe communities in Placer County) Go online to libertyutilities/west or call customer service at 800-782-2506. Online, the company has a form that can be filled out and submitted, which sends an immediate email to all appropriate Liberty Utilities personnel. • The National Weather Service: Updated weather information is available online at wrh.noaa.gov/sto/ • Pacific Gas & Electric Co. PG&E advises customers who smell natural gas, see downed power lines or suspect other emergency situations to leave the area immediately and call 9-1-1 and PG&E at 1-800-743-5000. Customer Service: 1-800-743-5000, Electric Outage Information: 1-800-743-5002, Natural Gas System Information: 1-888-743-7431 • Placer County Public Works Department (for downed trees and other general maintenance and flooding issues on county roads). During normal business hours, call Public Works at 530-889-7565. During after-hours and weekends, the public may call Sheriffs Dispatch at 530-886-5375 and Dispatch will notify Public Works field personnel. PRECAUTIONS TO TAKE DURING THE STORM: The Placer County Flood Control and Water Conservation District advises residents to: • Avoid areas subject to sudden flooding; • Avoid trying to cross flowing streams where water is above the knees because residents could be swept away by strong currents; • Not sightsee in flooded areas or try to enter areas blocked off by local authorities; • Avoid unnecessary trips, and dress warmly and advise others of destinations when traveling during storms. • Monitor radio, television or online news sites for emergency information and instructions from authorities; • Keep vehicles fueled in case power outages interrupt service station operations; • Know safe routes from home or work that lead to higher ground; • Store drinking water in closed, clean containers in case water service is interrupted; • If flooding is likely and time permits, move essential items and furniture to higher ground, such as the upper floors of homes; •If advised by local authorities to leave home, move to safe areas promptly before access is cut off by flood waters.
