WISE WORDS FROM A FRIEND: Has someone ever come to you for advice and then you watch as they do the exact OPPOSITE of what you say? Its like, you can tell someone the truth! And man, they just dont want to listen to the truth. The more truth you say, the more they just go another direction. One of the biggest reasons we do this is because most of us dont have an operating definition of what truth really is. Well let me give you one. Some people will agree and others will disagree, and thats okay. The point though, is we are going to establish a compass and watch it in action. Heres what it is: Truth is experience. Its not the words, or the labels, or the operating definitions. Its the way we experience something and integrate the feelings we have around that experience. And as long as were working with that definition, we can see a lot of things suddenly make sense out there in the world. Heres one. We cant TELL people the truth. Because truth isnt words, its experience. No matter what you say to people they have to come to an experience of it before it is real to them. As a matter of fact, when you tell it to them, you actually set them up not to listen to you. Because we are experience-seeking creatures, as soon as we hear something, So when we point out something to people - we tell them flat out what they answer is, they NEED to go another direction. Because what youve given them isnt truth, youve only given them words. Their mind automatically jumps to other options because inherently your words are empty. Because when you frame something for someone, that part of them that needs the experience of it kicks in. And so by telling someone what the truth is, you are likely to send them in the other direction. Plato, in the allegory of the cave, talks about a teacher that saves someone by making them realize theyve been trapped in a giant cave. But that teacher didnt say hey, youre in a cave ... he threw off the shackles, let him look around, and then drug him up the stairs into the sun. We often describe enlightenment as being in truth. We often say its sitting in silence, being in the realness of the world around you. When you have a working definition of what truth is, you can see why this is the case. The truth will set you free. To dance in truth is to live in experiences. ~Jedediah Walls
