Was just thinking about one of the rules I live by and thought I would share. Im sure there are those who would disagree and Ive never researched whether what I am saying is true by any measure but here goes - Here is why you should always go first, if you get the chance in any setting where your performance will be gauged: 1. You get hidden brownie points for being brave and volunteering to be first. 2. If you mess it up, youre not judged as harshly. Theyll give you somewhat of a break for being willing to step up and be first. 3. If you knock it out of the park then you put pressure on everyone that follows and you make them nervous. That can play to your advantage. The more nervous they are the more likelihood they screw up and make you look even better. 4. You dont run the risk of following someone who just killed it. Youre arbiter/judge/teacher has nothing to base your performance against. You set the standards. Ive found this works in almost every setting from work to school to social engagements. Dont be afraid. Go for it. You risk less being the first to dive in! Ive made people behind me so nervous sometimes that my mediocre performance looks stellar in comparison!
