Watch me get schooled by a CenturyLink tech... Hello, you have reached CenturyLink Internet support, my name is Wayne in Salt Lake. Will you please verify the billing name and service address on this account? [snip] Wayne in Salt Lake: Thanks Garry, Let me pull up your account and help you out Garry: Thanks, I appreciate that. My download speeds are now crawling at 560K Wayne in Salt Lake: Are you running wifi, ethernet or both? Garry: Both Wayne in Salt Lake: I assume both are slow? Garry: I think so, yes. Garry: Definitley wifi Wayne in Salt Lake: I am getting a report of a possible filter on the line. I want to double check 1 thing. Is the green dsl cable going straight from the dsl port on the modem into the wall jack? No splitters, filters or surge protectors? Garry: That is correct. No junk between the wall and modem. Wayne in Salt Lake: Another thing that jumps out is this. We use the decibel rating looking for noise on the line. We need that number to be in the high teens to the 30’s. Right now you are at 6 dB. This has dropped your speed from 40M down to 30M with numerous data collisions. Data collisions are like car crashes on the freeway which will cause the data to slow down, just like the cars would get backed up. Garry: Im familiar with collisions, but those only happen on a hub. No one has made hubs in years, everything is switching these days. And there is no way you are getting collisions on fiber, which is what this is supposed to be. So, what gives? Im getting less than a T1 of bandwidth here, NOT 30Mbps. Wayne in Salt Lake: These collisions are being reported on our side Garry: OK, great. So, is there a fix in the works? Wayne in Salt Lake: Yes. Wayne in Salt Lake: I am going to dispatch a technician to check the cabling in the field. There are no charges for this. Garry: I take it that doesnt happen until sometime tomorrow? Wayne in Salt Lake: With all the weather related problems its probably going to take longer, we are behind on work right now Garry: Nice. OK, just let management know that this is the exact reason that I left Comcast recently. Too bad there arent any other choices. Wayne in Salt Lake: I hear ya FML
