We all blame ESKOM (ESCOM?). We all throw stones at Eskom - TopicsExpress

We all blame ESKOM (ESCOM?). We all throw stones at Eskom (Escom?). Pity we dont have coals to chuck at them. [Once it even was EVKOM = Elektrisiteitsvoorsieningskommissie] HOWEVER: Esk/com and its management should NOT take all the blame. Fifteen (yes, 15) years ago top brass at Esk/com warned the government that resources will run short in the 2010s unless proper provision is made and extra power stations are erected. The GOVERNMENT did NOT heed this warning - as they ignore most other danger signs and traffic lights - and look where we are today. This is a total economic catastrophe. During the festive season - the busiest time of the year for businesses (yes, the two words correlate) - shops, factories, restaurants etc are simply left in the dark, have to shut their doors for several hours every day and sacrifice any income that wouldve and couldve been earned during those loadsheddings. Fine. Many home owners and businesses are therefore purchasing generators. But the irony/joke/tragedy is that in the process we will quickly run short of diesel as well. The Mosgas (PetroSA) diesel is feeding straight to the power stations in order to keep them sort of delivering. Very little is pumped to storage tanks whence (from where) it can be obtained by the petrol companies and distributed to filling stations. The same applies to imported fuel. If you have a petrol generator, you might survive longer. We are already running dangerously low on any form of electricity supply. Which implies that unless desperate measures are taken, we could be in total darkness for months on end. I’m the eternal optimist. I always have a half full glass. (I irritate some people with my positiveness and optimism) But if we are stuck without electricity - let alone dying of hunger, no radio, internet or television, no hospital services etc etc - well have anarchy. And then the diamond of Africa will collapse and sparkle no more. Science Fiction? Doomsday prophecy? Nope. A possibility and a reality. Thank you, government and presidents Mbeki and Zuma.
