We all have our favorites objects from ancient Egypt and this beautiful object is one of Petrie’s personal favorites. It is a statuette of a young Nubian woman. She holds a dish (tazze vase) in her hands. The dish rests on the head of a monkey (UC 14210). It is made of ebony (height 17,5 cm) and is dated to the late18th Dynasty. Petrie did not excavate this statuette himself but he bought it in Cairo. The figure is now restored. When it was found (about 1896), both forearms were missing and the monkey with the tazze vase on his head was broken off. In his book “The Arts and Crafts of Ancient Egypt” (page 43, figure 40) Petrie describes this statuette :“ The detail of this statuette is better than any other such work ; the perfect pose of the attitude, the poise of the head, the fullness of the muscles, the innocent gravity of the expression, are all excellent.”
