We are a part of History!!!! Yesterday, the New York City Council - TopicsExpress

We are a part of History!!!! Yesterday, the New York City Council made history when it voted to pass the Community Safety Act, two pieces of legislation that will combat discriminatory policing and hold the NYPD accountable. It’s a remarkable victory that will lead to safer communities and a fairer, more equitable City. You may know these bills were passed earlier this summer, but Mayor Bloomberg subsequently vetoed the legislation, and vowed to use his vast wealth and power to challenge Council Members who supported reforming NYPD practices. Yesterday, in a victory for all New Yorkers, the City Council stood up to the Mayor and voted to override the vetoes. We applaud the Council for showing leadership to build safer communities and end discriminatory practices. This victory is the result of years of grassroots effort led by Communities United for Police Reform (CPR), a coalition of dozens of grassroots, policy, and legal organizations that worked to craft the CSA and advance a serious discussion on effective policing in New York City. DPA is a proud member of CPR, and we’d like to thank the member organizations, CPR staff, and the thousands of New Yorkers who worked so hard to win these significant reforms. And we thank you – by fighting to fix New York’s broken marijuana possession laws, you’ve contributed to efforts to win a fairer and more equitable justice system in our City. As for reforming our marijuana laws, because of these bills, the number of arrests for unlawful marijuana arrests will very likely decrease, reducing the number of young people, especially young men of color, being swept into our broken criminal justice system. We still need to fix New York’s marijuana laws, and we’re another step closer with the passage of the Community Safety Act. Thanks for all you do. Drug Policy Alliance
