We attended a showing of the NRDC film Wild Things, presented by the Western Environmental Law Center (WELC) in Eugene, OR Monday night at Cozmic Pizza. The film is primarily about a new way for ranchers to co-exist with predators, and an emerging idea that predators are actually valuable to the ecosystem. There was lots of discussion of the remarkable positive changes seen in Yellowstone since the re-introduction of the wolf, which was particularly interesting. Another interesting idea was that only about 2% of US beef production is grazed on public land. If this was curtailed or severely reduced, the natural landscape would quickly return providing increased shelter and nourishment for native species. This would benefit everyone and have only a miniscule impact on the overall beef industry. WELC is planning future showings of this film and a new one from the NRDC in Oregon soon. Well keep you posted. nrdc.org/wildlife/wild-things/
