We believe that every vet with military or combat related PTSD has - TopicsExpress

We believe that every vet with military or combat related PTSD has developed it under their own individual (unique) circumstances that have some common similarities (if nothing else than just the commonality of military service), and some differences. Examples.... Some fired, and some didnt have a chance to fire back, but were fired upon. Some came back with physical wounds, some only mental. Some saw hundreds of people die and/or be horribly/violently wounded, some only saw a couple die, but they just happened to be their closest friends, their battles. Some saw and experienced devastating things that they cant even talk about in the privacy of a counselling office due to their clearance levels, which creates whole new problems for them. Some were under mortar attack every day, watching people die around them, wondering when it would be them next, and surrounded by people that all look like the enemy, but you just dont know if they are till they make a hostile move, and worrying (24/7) if then it may be too late. Some were on the saving side of the fight as medics, or first responders, who never fired a weapon, but saw plenty of death and carnage, and frequently come home with a deep sense of guilt that they could have saved more. The stories go on and on and each persons is different, unique to them.... and NO ONE in the psychological world has come up with any SOLID conclusion (despite many suggested theories) as to why some are affected more than others, and for the purposes of this page (and in our opinions) it REALLY doesnt matter why. Who are we to judge the severity of someones PTSD, or have debates about, who has it worse? .... or to say that just because someone experienced some certain aspect of war/conflict, that hey are more deeply affected than another?? We here recognize and acknowledge each individuals PTSD causes certain levels (from mild to severe, and even life-threatening) of problems, symptoms, and challenges in all or most aspects of their lives. We want to offer our support and understanding wherever possible, and maintain a safe forum for gaining more understanding and support for all as we go along. The VA and the Military have their guidelines for how they decide to divvy up their funds and benefits, and have classifications for combat veterans and war veterans and such, but those classifications cannot necessarily be applied to levels of trauma. (Especially since there are plenty of service members who have had to engage the enemy, or have been fired upon in a non-recognized conflict, and have PTSD because of those experiences, but cant get recognized for it.) Having said all of this, WE will not support, on THIS page, discussions or arguments or suggestions, that my experience was worse than yours. Thats foolish and triggering, and serves NO good purpose whatsoever. EVERYONE with PTSD is struggling with some level or another with it (and so are their families). They dont need to feel insulted by people suggesting here that they are less than. In fact, there are some out there with PTSD who desperately need help, but WONT seek it, because they think they cant have military PTSD if they never fired a weapon at someone in the line of duty, which is completely NOT true. We dont want to allow any posts or comments on this page to support that kind of thinking. Here there are no Combat vets vs. Non Combat vets vs. MST vets. Our main focus is Military PTSD. WE here on this page, want to support ANY Vet with PTSD (and their spouses, significant others, and family members), regardless of their situation, or the exact circumstances that led to it. We are not here to just throw opinions around either. The best support response you could give is, What I/we did in (whatever situation) was to . . . It worked for me/us and helped, maybe it is something you could try and could work for you. From the admin team at Military With PTSD ~ Written by Michele Smith
