We cannot continue to do things to women, then be surprised when - TopicsExpress

We cannot continue to do things to women, then be surprised when things happen that lead to cesarean. We cannot continue to negotiate for inductions, compromise on stripping membranes, pretending like we trust birth, respect birth or support normal birth and keep winding up with the same outcomes without beginning to understand that the cesarean itself is an expected outcome with a pretty known percentage of occurrence in these situations. If you know your baby will come, stretching, sweeping, inducing, forcing, timelining and herbing yourself into birth is not supportive of the process. Women need to stop REQUESTING to have their bodies tampered with and begin to trust themselves and trust the process by which eons of women have given birth. Midwives need to stop handing out these solutions to a problem that doesnt exist. And Doctors need to be told no if they are holding you to guidelines that enforce these precepts. If you are planning a normal birth or a normal birth after cesarean, dont do things that raise your risks for changing that equation unless they are medically indicated and your baby is in danger. And if your baby is truly in danger then perhaps the reality is that you need a cesarean so why are they offering herbs, stretching, sweeping, induction and other things that raise your risks? One of the saddest things I hear on the internet is a birth story of ridiculous crap imposed on women and babies then the words Well, my doctor gave me a chance and I got my cesarean on my own terms. It speaks volumes that the illusion of care matters more than the reality of care. Laws should not determine care during pregnancy. Women should determine their care, choose their providers and be allowed to birth their babies without fighting every step of the way. Stop falling for the illusion that checking out of pregnancy early is without risk. #cesareanawarenessmonth Day 28
