We ended up having to go to the emergency animal hospital in the middle of the night tonight. Heres what happened: I was introducing Kovu and Dusky to the boys. Treble was, as always, being very aggressive. Kovu was bleeding because, when I pulled him out of the QT cage, he kicked at me and ripped off a second toenail. I was watching them and Treble was mainly being mean to Dusky. Dusky climbed out onto me and Treble calmed down. Indie and Kovu were in the hide house, just chilling. Treble went in and there was a bang, so I pulled Treble out and at first glance looking in, Kovu looked fine. Treble calmed down again and wasnt bothering them anymore. I ran Dusky downstairs and had to carefully take Kovu back out, as to not hurt his toenail more. I took him into the bathroom to wipe his toe off and OH MY FREAKING GOD he had this HUGE open wound on his shoulder that went down to the muscle! It had definitely not been there when he was put in there. I cant wrap my head around when it happened or how, but can only assume Treble did that when there was a bang. He has NEVER hurt the other rats like this and I am SHOCKED. We took him to the emergency vet and the vet there didnt know about rats. She couldnt get ahold of anyone who did. She didnt want to stitch or staple or because she couldnt find out what sedative would be safe and didnt know how to keep him from scratching them out. She glued it shut after cleaning it. The only pain medicine she could find safe to give him was metacam, which will last through the weekend. She said to bring him back Monday when a rat vet will be there to do further work. She thinks the reason he is being hurt so easily is malnutrition from the pet store we just got him from a week ago. I am putting him in a second QT cage, so Dusky doesnt mess with the wound (trying to clean it), but I did show Dusky where he is, so he doesnt worry. In maybe a month I will do more introductions VERY carefully. I will also be neutering Treble at Christmas.
