“We gather this Memorial Day to proudly remember those who gave their lives in defense of our Nation and the freedoms we enjoy today. In the face of overwhelming peril, their patriotism and valor helped secure a more peaceful world for future generations. We are forever indebted and eternally grateful for their sacrifices. “I also want to recognize and thank the courageous men and women still serving in our armed forces, many of whom are stationed far from the safety of home, and our veterans for their service and enduring commitment to the welfare of others. They, and their families, remain in my thoughts and prayers. “For nearly 150 years, starting with the end of the Civil War, family and friends have joined together and paid tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice by adorning soldiers’ graves with wreaths and flags. Today we continue this important tradition. All across the country, in cities and towns of every size, we commemorate and honor those who gave their lives through parades, picnics, and family gatherings that reflect both a collective sadness and a shared joy. For in our remembrance we also celebrate, as President Lincoln so aptly said, ‘that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion’ - life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. “This year marks another Memorial Day with our Nation at war in Afghanistan. As we continue to see our troops return home and we look to the promise of a more peaceful future, we must rededicate ourselves to the common purpose of keeping America free and strong. “Thank you for allowing me to join with you today to remember the fallen heroes, from wars past and present, who gave their lives in the service of this great nation.
