We got a dealers catalogue recently, and everything was graded by the US standard. This would have been fine, except this guy is British and his list contains primarily British coins. This has always been a subject of great debate, and one that people can get very passionate about. I have no problem per se with US grading, though I do have a problem with GB collectors/dealers using the US system. In my opinion the US one is in no way superior to the UK one, so why when we have a perfectly adequate one of our own, use another one? Ignoring for one moment the fact that we dont grade in the same way, so it is virtually impossible to translate one to the other, it is the lower grades that cause the biggest problem. We go Poor, Fair and then Fine; which in the English language makes sense; poor coins are poor, Fair coins are fair (ie modest, not much cop), and Fine coins are fine, ie good enough for many collectors. The US tends to ignore Poor (some use that term, but many dont) and then goes Good, Very Good and then Fine. But Good and Very Good coins are neither Good or Very Good, so it flies in the face of logic. I am sure our friends from across the pond will make a case for the US system, but to me ours is superior and when in the UK - use our system!
