We got a very special pre-Christmas present this morning: OTTERS at Lagunitas! Just as we were starting out, crossing the bridge to the fire road, I caught movement out of my eye. Thought oh, cute, we scared some raccoons and theyre running along the creek, but as I watched, from the long bodies and the way they moved, realized it was RIVER OTTERS...FOUR of them! Stood there watching (dogs very excited, of course), knowing I didnt have time to pull out my videocam before they were too far away, when I caught movement out of the corner of my eye on the OTHER side of the bridge...FOUR MORE! They dived, and I grabbed my videocam and caught just a bit of them when they resurfaced on the other side of the bridge, swimming away. The last one even looks to have a fish in his mouth...what a thrill! I tried to stabilize and lighten up the video as best I could; obviously its still not great, but there they are! We met up with a couple of guys I run into down on Concrete Pipe when we run it and they said they see them there regularly...theyve seen as many as five at one time, so well be keeping a lookout in future, you can be sure!
