We had a great conversation on my personal page about yesterdays post. I didnt want you guys to be left out, so here it is. This is in reference to teaching a dog to eat all their food every time it is in front of them. Laura - I like when you share these posts because I dont have really any experience with dogs. Cats are totally different so its nice to learn something new. Michelle - And NO people food! Josh - I like sharing these posts as well Laura! As long as you guys are learning, Ill keep posting. Mary - Why only 5 minutes Josh? It takes me longer than that to eat. Is 5 minutes normal for a meal in the wild? Josh - Dogs eat faster. Laura - Josh, does this rule change if they are geriatric or sick? Josh - No, Laura. A lot of people start to bend the rules when dogs are injured or sick because they feel bad, but this is just making it worse by adding our human emotions to the situation and therefor humanizing the dog. Heres the key, the dog doesnt want to be treated any differently because they wouldnt do that. Think about the dog that has 3 legs. Do they live differently? Nope, they are just as full of life. Laura - So what if they have some sort of wasting illness as an old geriatric dog, you dont try to keep weight on it? I mean at some point all old animals stop being normal. In the wild they would have just died off already. Kim - Its also important to note that dogs can go for days without eating without suffering any ill effects. So a stubborn dog may try to wait you out, and its important to stick to your guns. Kim - When I worked at a vet, we saw a Great Dane whose owners would cave in and give him meat, like beef. You better believe they inadvertently taught him to wait it out. Josh - Thats a pretty tough one and there are a lot of ethics mixed up in it. It all depends on what each owner is comfortable with. Is the animal really enjoying being kept alive or would it rather be left alone to go in peace. I cant answer that for anyone. That one is completely on what the owner decides. Josh - Great point, Kim! Laura - I like that answer!
