We had a great day at camp today! It was really hot, but there was no rain! Every day we switch horses. Each horse is very different and has a personality of its own. We are learning a lot from each horse. In our morning lesson we worked on transitions from walk to trot. Our balanced position is important as we change our gaits! We had a special visit from Leif, a farrier who takes care of Val. He showed us how he takes the horse’s shoes off, trims their feet and puts new shoes on. We saw how Leif makes new shoes by heating the steel shoe in his forge and shapes it specially to fit the horse. It was surprising that it does not hurt the horses when he worked on their feet and nails the shoes the horse’s hoofs! In our unmounted lesson we learned the parts of the horse’s foot. Julianne told us how important the job of the farrier is. If the horse does not have properly cared for healthy feet they will be lame and cannot be ridden! In arts and crafts we got a shoe that one of the horses on the farm wore. We saw that no two shoes are the same because no two horse’s feet are the same. We decorated the horseshoe and put a picture of us riding in it! In our afternoon lesson we worked on our position in two point as we went over trotting poles. We have a lot to concentration on as we steer to the middle of the poles, keep our distances from each other, and keep a steady pace!
