We havent gone too far since the era of the silent movies, baby. Yes, there are serious problems of racism and cultural marginalization and caricaturization of the yellow man and yellow woman in racial Hollywood. We havent gone too far, Virginia. There oughta be a sequel to Arthur Dongs Chinese Hollywood and Jeff Adachis Slanted Door, both documentaries made over a decade ago, chronicling and capturing the imagery of the yellow man and woman in racial Hollywood. These days, the barriers are more than the white-black paradigm. It is not just trying to convince the studio heads, the screenwriters, the creative people behind and in front of the cameras, and the network of supporting work culture in West L.A., in Hollywood studios..... to be sensitized to Asian-Americans..... it is trying to convince and re-educate entire generations of Johnnys,Joes, Susies and Marys that the Asians in their midst are not less than, diminished, nor caricaturized stereotypes and broadbrushed props, without humanity, nor personality. It is trying to persuade Asian actors and actresses who need work that beyond that paycheck there is a higher calling and responsibility to do things right by and for their fellow Asians in their creative endeavors. That will take a systemic, multi-pronged effort across the board in all American institutions... from the White House to the Out House, from the Chow House to the Dog House. Finally, what should not be missed is convincing and educating the newbies, the new immigrants coming in from Asia, specially China, not to lap up that racial social-heirarchical pecking order in white-supremacist America, or a white-black racial paradigm that is increasingly being the compromise middle-ground.
