We just heard from a family that tried to get help with cats they were feeding; they wanted the cats trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, eartipped, and returned (TNRd), and even managed to find a way to pay an individual to trap for them. The elder member of the family was looking after the cats, but the younger family members were doing a lot of coordinating and trying to ensure that the project stayed on track, that all of the cats were treated, and so on. With one cat in the trap already, the individual insisted on the elder either paying more money, or agreeing that the cat be released WITHOUT being treated. This is very upsetting, because it is disrespectful to bait and switch -- to agree to one arrangement, and then change that arrangement midway through. Older people should not be taken advantage of. For that matter, nor should anyone else! It is hard to raise funds for community cat projects. It is only with the support and trust of the community, that we can continue to make progress to see fewer and fewer kittens born outdoors. Good programs work to coordinate projects, so that nobody is surprised and no one is disrespected. PGFFs status as a charity means we owe it to the community to contribute to the public good. That includes being respectful of everyone and being thoughtful in how we go about our work. We cant stop individuals from preying on others, but we CAN pledge that everyone in PGFF really believes in people, and does our work in the public interest.
