We knew Daniel ... his girlfriend is a friend of Emilys. They - TopicsExpress

We knew Daniel ... his girlfriend is a friend of Emilys. They came to visit Michael on his 2nd day in the hospital after diagnosis last summer. I remember he wheeled in Michaels room in his wheelchair and he was completely bald, and had no eyebrows or facial hair at all (if I recall correctly that is), and was unable to walk at that point. He heard about Michael and wanted to come and give him some pointers. He had a completely different cancer than Michael, and was recovering from surgeries to remove parts of the bones in his legs that were replaced with metal rods, so he was going through P/T, and if I recall he was unable to straighten out his legs when we met him. Although Michael never said so, I think it startled Michael to see Daniel completely bald, and mostly hairless. Im pretty sure he was thinking that would be him soon. I sure had those thoughts. I believe Daniel was cancer free at that point, yet still receiving chemo, P/T, etc. He was AMAZING to talk to ... we were so thankful for his visit, and I remember Michaels dad and I must have asked him 50 questions each. He politely answered every one ... Michael just listened and soaked it all in. We complimented him repeatedly on his positive outlook, his knowledge, etc and I remember telling him he should be a social worker or cancer advocate and speak to cancer patients. He had just finished high school and said he was going to do that ... he sure had alot to offer and alot to share from his experiences. He was a great speaker ... very eloquent and well versed. And, he was passionate about pediatric cancer. Now, he has been silenced ... stupid cancer has silenced him. Forever. What a shame ... he would have done great things. We were all very saddened to hear of his passing a few weeks ago. I posted Dr. Rosenbergs original post about The Fault in our Stars a few weeks ago ... she was one of Michaels doctors for a few weeks during his last stay. Even though our stomachs always sank when we saw her (unfortunately, she seemed to always bring bad news), she was wonderful. Im happy to read her kind words about Daniel, and Im sure he thought just as highly of her. RIP Daniel ....
