We like to brag on our children and grandchildren but sometimes - TopicsExpress

We like to brag on our children and grandchildren but sometimes there is something deeper that they do that changes your ideas about what they may do when they grow up. This is a poem written by Jacob my 16 year old grandson who was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy recently. I think he can be whomever he chooses without question. I am from opportunities. Im from settlers riding the waves toward the new world. Im from oppression by an empire spanning seas. Im from humble beginnings and hard work, farming from subsistence to feed the family. Im from the willingness to shelter those in need. Im from a want as old as time, to have a home not a house, with a wife to cherish and kids to spoil. Im from a generation lost to technology with no feel for the outside world in all its majesty. But Im more than that, Im from crossing borders to an American lifestyle. Im from joy in reaching new heights like my grandfather before me. Im from the need to excel in all things. Im from lifetimes spent out on the dock fishing away the sorrows of the world. Im from a college coffee shop in Huntsville, Texas where my parents had their first encounter. Im from living in new places from upstairs to one story to two story back to one story. But Im also from lies and deceit. From bruises and scars. From wounds still fresh on the mind From a home abandoned causing a void in the heart. From a parent left to carry the burden of raising a child alone. But. Im also from betterment, forgiveness and redemption. From growing to be my own man and live my own life. From rolling up my sleeves and doing the work that needs to be done. To making my own path outside the normal. You may see a middle class American but Im far more than that. by Jacob Eckles May, 2014
