We thank historian Paul W. Schopp, a former executive director of the Camden County Historical Society and author of numerous local history related books and papers, for the following gracious summary of the book Along the Cooper River: “From the formerly dense industrial corridor comprising its first two miles to its bucolic setting in Haddonfield and Cherry Hill, the Cooper River flows through the heart of Camden County. Initially a route of transport and commerce, the stream’s beauty began to attract those seeking recreation late in the nineteenth century. During the 1920s, Renown planner Charles W. Leavitt observed all the potential the Cooper River had to offer the citizens of Camden County and the region when he began designing a park along its banks between Camden and Haddonfield-Cherry Hill. Today the Cooper River Park annually serves thousands of people, who walk or run along the park’s paths, while often unaware that the waterway once powered mills or farmers shipped produce to market from wharves and landings along its banks. For those who use the park and those with an interest in local history, Along the Cooper River will offer you a deeper appreciation for the Cooper River of yesteryear and why it remains an indispensable part of life today.” —Paul W. Schopp, historian Paul’s many titles include: Trail of the Blue Comet: A History of the Jersey Centrals Southern Division, New Jersey Linseed Oil Mills, Nickel Processing in New Jersey from Camden to Constable Hook, and Eavenson & Levering, Wool Scourers. Paul generously provided many images in Along the Cooper River and shared his encyclopedic knowledge of Camden County and City history.
