We, therefore, the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor. These words ended the Declaration of Independence that was proclaimed and took effect today, July 4, 1776, 238 years ago, that after more than a decade of unpopular British policies over the 13 Colonies of North America and violence against its people, and after the victories in Lexington and Concord and the pivotal battle of Bunker Hill, and years of deliberations of the Continental Congress that climaxed in the June 6 proposal of independence by one of its representatives, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, and its national independence resolution of July 2, and with the signatures of 56 delegates of the colonies, including its author Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, President of the Congress John Hancock and Secretary of the Congress Charles Thomson, formally marked the birth of the first of the truly free nations of the world, the great UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the dissolution of formal ties to the United Kingdom as a whole because of the open war that had been raging between crown supporters and the Patriots who opposed the repressive British policies since the spring of 1775. Today despite all that it has gone through the United States of America today marks yet another glorious anniversary of its foundation in the midst of the conflict that gave birth to it and inspired so many to break free the chains of repression and restriction of personal rights in the years following that great event in 1776. Sustained forever by the sacrifices of its uniformed services and the great inventions and events that not only shaped this country but in one way or another hepled transform our world, it will forever be a shining beacon of liberty and freedom to a world darkened by evil.
