We visited a Japanese confinement camp yesterday that is about 35 miles from us. What a sobering site. Confined at this camp for 3 years were 10,000 Japanese American and Japanese immigrants from Washington, Oregon and Alaska. Sent by train and bus, these people were forced from their homes, farms, and businesses, given only a few days to get ready... men, women, elderly, children. A sad time in our history, America, when fear and tension destroyed the lives of these people, most were American citizens. Suspicion based on only their heritage. What a contrast to the experience Benjamin had visiting Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. There is no justification, though, for the injustice. My heritage is Scandinavian, if you insert Sweden into the scenario instead of Japan, and my family was rounded up and sent to a confinement camp, the feeling of the injustice done....a sign had a statement that sums it up. This must never happen again.
