We would ask everyone who would believes that the Manor Ground should remain open to all – and their friends and neighbours, to contact their local Councillors either by email or letter, demanding that they act on behalf of their constituents in ensuring that all residents of the area continue to enjoy free and open access to the Manor Sports ground. Email addresses are at the bottom of this post. We demand and deserve transparency and openness in the County and Borough Council’s dealings with the tax-paying (and voting) public. Judging by the response from Councillor James in his new blog – set up hastily as part of WSCC’s ‘commitment to open consultation’, considerable local opposition to the proposed restrictions on the use of the Manor Sports ground has struck a nerve. Most of the statements contained within James’ blog appear contradictory and trite, but still fail to address certain key questions. Councillor James states ‘The County Council has always been upfront about the proposed use of the Manor Sports Ground’ – and that ‘It has always been our intention to consult with the public on the shared use of the land at an appropriate stage’!! - The County Council has already admitted to having discussions with the Cricket Club, Bohunt and the Borough Council and we have an email from Bohunt to a prospective parent regarding the Manor Ground stating that ‘ negotiations are at an advanced stage’ . On that basis, the County Council’s opinion regarding ‘consultation at an appropriate stage’ seems to be when it’s all been agreed and the ink is drying on the contract! - Another statement from Councillor James - which belies any attempt at consultation reads - ‘Bohunt is very happy to share the site – and see full public access on all ‘other’ occasions, e.g. prior to the school day, after the school day, school holidays and weekends.’ This again seems to be accepting that Bohunt already have control over the amenity and that they will determine when we, the residents of Worthing Borough, will be able to use our own sports ground. It would certainly appear from the tone of Councillor James comments, that this is indeed a done deal and that our Borough Council and the local residents will have to roll over and accept WSCC’s diktats.
