Wednesday Rescue Lesson: An ALL BREED rescue has to keep a balance of dogs in their rescue. You cant have one breed of dog, nothing but brown dogs; nothing but hairy dogs; nothing but big dogs. If you went into your favorite retailer and saw nothing but the same dress on every rack would you recommend that retailer to your friends or even go back when you needed a new dress? Same goes for saving every single dog with a broken leg, heartworm positive, senior, ect. The rescue has to have a good mix of dogs or they will go broke. (now please keep in mind that there are rescues SPECIFIC to senior dogs, black dogs, brown dogs, small dogs, breeds, ect. but I am NOT talking about those here). Being the one that makes the decision of who you take in and who you dont take in can be heart wrenching BUT if you dont know when to say NO then you shouldnt be in the position to make that decision. You can not go around gathering every single heartworm positive dog, malnourished dog, broken legged dog you can find... you have to keep a balance. I also do not think it is right that there are rescues out there that scoop up every HIGHLY adoptable dog they can find. That is NOT rescuing, that is flipping! I have MANY times said to my volunteers Dont take XXX dog, another rescue will scoop him up or he will get adopted straight from the pound. Why fill the available foster homes with a dog I know will be adopted straight to a family rather then saving the ugly dog in the cage next to him who after vetting and love will be BEAUTIFUL. Save the ones you know will be killed for space at the shelter or those who are in shelters that do not mandate spay/neuter so that the dog doesnt end up in the hands of a miller or back yard breeder. Is it ok to take a highly adoptable from the shelter YES but once in while not every time.
