Week 9s Prep Pigskin Report “City game of the Week” will feature a Division 3 City League matchup, between the Patrick Henry Patriots (4-3) and the Hoover High Cardinals (5-2). Both teams are undefeated in City League play, with the Patriots (1-0) and the Cardinals (2-0). These rivals have extremely contrasting identities. The Cardinals are a defensive titan, that looks to a primarily run based offense to control the clock. While the high octane Patriots, like to put the ball in the air with over 80% of their scores being receptions. Hoover Cardinals host Senior night this Friday October 24th, and kickoff is 6:30 PM at Hoover High School! Head Coach Jerry Ralph has transformed Hoovers football program, values, and approach. “Three years ago when I took over the team, about 40% our team was academically ineligible. We focused on academics and discipline, which changed the culture and mindset of our players.” The results are truly evident with the Hoover Cardinals. Last year, the Cardinals led the county in defense and continue to stifle opposing offenses this year. They come into this week with five wins, with 3 being shutouts and 2 only allowing one score. Hoover Cardinals are riding a three game win streak and have their sights on its 1st League championship in 15 years. Defensively, the Cardinals are stacked with collegiate talent. #7 Defensive Lineman Jaquille Bradford led the state in sacks last year, and already has 11 sacks through 7 games. Scholar athlete #77 Austin Brown is averaging 11 tackles a game and has an impressive 9 sacks. #28 LB Lewis Butler is the defensive nucleus and leads the team with 13 tackles per game. Hoover has 9 iron man players, so their smash mouth defense mentality translates over to the ground and pound offense. #6 QB Zyair Valezquez manages the clock control offense and has eight total touchdowns (4 Rush, 4 Pass). Running backs #1 Demontauz Gray and #20 George Jones share the rushing load. Jones has totaled 771 yards, 8.0 yards/carry, 110 yards/game, and 5 touchdowns. Patrick Henry Patriots have a high flying and dynamic offense. They will challenge Hoovers defense through the air. #11 QB Christopher Samaniego leads the passing proficient offense. He has put up fantasy type statistics so far. He brags a total 1278 yards passing, 213 yards per game, 20 passing TD with only 5 INTs, and a magnificent 109.9 quarter back rating! Not only can he hurt opposing defenses with his arm, but Samaniego has rushed for 36 carries, 303 yards, 8.4 yards/carry, and 2 rushing touchdowns. Dynamic wide receiver #15 Dezmon Patmon has been lighting up the scoreboard. Patmon impresses with 29 receptions, 607 yards, 21 yards/catch, 101 yards/game, and 12 touchdowns. Defensively, the Patriots are led by #45 Dominic Smith, #2 Nolen Harris, and #3 Brandon Brooks. Smith has 3 sacks, Harris has 3 interceptions, and Brooks anchors with 2 interception and leads the team in tackles. This Friday will be a battle of a high flying offense against a powerhouse defense.
