Weekly film round-up: Prisoners: Taut, atmospheric thriller. Hugh Jackman delivers a surprisingly raw and emotional performance, whilst Jake Gyllenhaal is superb as the weary, obsessive Police Detective - a role few would have envisioned him pulling off a few years ago. The subject matter and unrelenting sense of dread means this isnt exactly light entertainment, but its well acted, well written and well directed. 4/5 Welcome To The Punch: Stylish British cop drama. A short, sharp shock of a film, with some great action scenes. The plot moves so fast that theres no real time to get to know or care about the main characters, which is a shame as James Mcavoy and Mark Strong make convincing rugged cop/career criminal archetypes. Its well worth watching though, and a beautifully shot and lit nocturnal London has never looked better. 4/5 Inglourious Basterds: An inspired, mad, funny, scary, twisted, bloody version of Nazi occupied France in 1942. One of QTs finest efforts, as always with Tarantino the dialogue is King. Some of the scenes are slow moving, but the palpable tension and constant shift of control and power between the characters stop it from ever being boring. Christoph Waltz is the star of the show as the absolutely fantastic Hans Landa, and steals every scene hes in (Thats a bingo!). Special mentions must go to the always impressive Michael Fassbender and the beautiful Melanie Laurent. I absolutely love this film and urge anyone who hasnt seen it to do so - please dont let the fact a lot of it is in French and German put you off! A classic - 5/5
